Paul Evans, Presenter & Writer.
Armed with only a handful of GCSE's - well, all right, 'O' levels - I won a DJ competition on Radio Luxembourg, a kind of 'X Factor' of the late Seventies. The prize? Presenting a show on the station. I've got the tape somewhere - complete with those nostalgic jingles and my rough, home counties vowels!
Working for radio stations up and down the country has certainly ironed out the accent, but in 1995 I settled in the South West after feeling homesick during an otherwise enjoyable stint at Newcastle's Metro FM.
1998 to 2003 found me based here in Dorset but commuting to South Wales, where I presented a simulcast phone-in across the Wireless Group's Welsh stations.
Once all the travelling was over, I was asked to present a regular slot on Dorchester-based Wessex FM - from the sublime to the ridiculous, as this time the daily 'commute' was around 500 metres across Salisbury Fields! Then, from around 2008-9, I had a much more enjoyable time as one of the launch presenters on The Bay 102.8, the new community radio station for nearby Poole & Bournemouth. It's amazing how your real radio skills kick back into action once you're finally free of focus groups and corporate puppets.
I still retain an advisory role with The Bay and hope to return there soon, however I'm currently running a dedicated website offering collectable, vintage radios for sale - and a web-building service which aims to get small and medium-sized businesses on-line.
